Ok, so you’re aware of the reasons why you need to use a natural progesterone cream. More than likely you’ve heard a success story like the ones detailed above from a friend or relative using the cream and now you are here looking for more information about your choices.

When looking for a Natural Progesterone Cream you are initially accosted by many claiming to be the “cure-all.” However, as I said earlier – not all of them are created equal!

So here’s what to watch out for:

Many creams use either a refined vegetable or mineral oil. Heating anything causes you to lose goodness from the original substance, but worse, good fats are turned to bad and can even become carcinogenic (cancer-forming.)

Steer well away from progesterone creams that use mineral oils. Mineral oils, being petrochemicals (made from the same stuff you put in your car), are potentially harmful, owing to the fact that they increase estrogen levels. What’s the point of using a progesterone cream that adds to estrogen dominance! Mineral oils also absorb the oil soluble vitamins A, D, E & K from the body which are then excreted, thereby depleting the body of vital nutrients. What a waste!

For this reason when looking for a cream it must be as far as possible – organic.
At present the “progesterone part” of creams cannot be made organic, but the majority of the rest of the ingredients can.

Although I have come to use supplements, I started off very skeptical. In fact – I still am. I will not use any cream on my skin unless I know it to be from the purest sources and the same goes for what I put in my mouth.

I spent ages researching and comparing different products and asking questions of the various manufacturers and sales people. Having long since realized how beneficial natural progesterone cream is to all women of all ages I realized I had to share my findings – the do’s and don’t of what to look for in a cream.

Do look for:

1. USP natural progesterone (meaning United States pharmaceutical grade progesterone) derived principally from stigmasterol, found in the soya-bean.

2. At least a 3.3% cream meaning it has 2000mg of progesterone per 60gm tube. Some progesterone creams are 1 – 2% formulas which are less effective and cost the same price - that’s taking the customer for a ride if you ask me. In some instances I’ve spent hours trying to find the progesterone percentage in a cream – if it’s not clearly stated on the list of ingredients, ask yourself what are they trying to hide? And move swiftly on!

3. Organic ingredients – this way you can be sure your formula is free of harmful estrogens

4. Virgin organic macadamia oil. Oil from the macadamia nut is one of the best natural moisturizers. These nuts contain approx 80% monounsaturated fats – and most of that is oleic acid (omega 9) known to be a beautifying fatty acid. They also contain large quantities of zinc – again – excellent for the skin.

5. Vegetable based ingredients - with no animal derivatives

6. A paraben-free formula. Parabens are preservatives that have recently been linked with breast cancer. They are used in many household cleaners and cosmetics, including skin creams.

7. Vitamin E – an excellent natural antioxidant

8. No synthetic antioxidants

9. A pH in balance with that of the skin

Don’t touch anything with:

1. Yam extracts. While yam creams or yam extract may provide other benefits,
they cannot correct hormonal imbalances and do not contain progesterone.
Nor do they convert into progesterone in the body. Many people are led astray by these bogus yam products.

2. A mineral oil base (for the reasons mentioned above)

3. Parabens (for the reasons mentioned above)

4. Synthetic antioxidants

5. Anything that says ‘PEG’. Any substance with ‘PEG’ as part of its name means it could be contaminated with dioxane, a known carcinogen.

6. Avoid scents and fragrances

7. A long list of ingredients. The less ingredients the better – you want the progesterone, the rest of the ingredients are just frills taking up good space in the tube.

8. Animal derivatives

But how do you know which preservatives are non-toxic, which ingredients contain parabens and which are vegetable based and so on …?

To save you the time and effort, and seeing as I’ve already done the research, I am going to detail the cream that I personally use. It is the only cream that has met my exacting standards as it is the first and only usp natural progesterone cream that I have found that consists of 89% organic ingredients.

The world seems to be “going organic” at every turn and for good reason too.

• it is a 3.3% cream meaning it has 2000mg of progesterone per tube – remember some creams are 1 – 2 % making them less effective at the same price!
  
  
• the citrus extract used is organic. Citrus complements the preservative system as it has excellent anti-microbial properties.
  
  
• Obviously a cream needs to contain water, oil, progesterone and, to keep it in the tube and delivered to our stores or homes, some emulsifiers (to thicken it up) and some natural preservatives and antioxidants.

  • Vegetable glycerine - this is excellent for hydrating the skin and although there are many other equally effective substances for doing this, most are synthetic and therefore potentially harmful.

• Vitamin E - Standard preparations contain only 0.1%. However, in addition to the Vitamin E found naturally in macadamia oil, Natpro contains a further 0.2%. Vitamin E is a natural antioxidant and is excellent for the skin.

Natpro does not contain any synthetic antioxidants. Most aqueous cream preparations use the two synthetic antioxidants BHA and BHT. Studies have shown that both of these are suspected of causing cancer and haemorrhaging. Both are harmful xeno-estrogens.
